Flotsam & Jetsam is the absolute place to be in San Juan, La Union. It is a well loved hostel and known for its cozy, rustic aura. They say that people who stay here all become friends—no strangers. Our favorite hangout place was at the kubo where numerous bean bags and a few duyans were. It’s also an open place so even non guests can hang out. But one of the selling points, for me, is their delicious and refreshing Makai Bowls!
This is Peanutbutter (we named him this, idk what his real name is), the only friend I made at Flotsam & Jetsam. He is the local cat here and is very friendly. He hopped on to me while I was chilling at one of the hammocks.
Now for the main event–Makai Bowls! Loved all the varieties, all very refreshing, delicious and healthy! I can eat these for breakfast for the rest of my life, tbh. They are smoothies with oats and fruits served in a wooden bowl.
This is my personal favorite. This is the Carille (PHP 220), the chocolate smoothie bowl. It has banana, peanut butter, cocoa, coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut shavings, oats and honey. YUUUUUM.
This is the Amianan (PHP 220), a fruity and zesty treat–the dragon fruit smoothie bowl. It has dragon fruit, bananas, mangoes, papayas, acai juice, oats and coconut shavings. Delicious and refreshing! Perfect for a hot summer morning by the beach.
This is the Beach Break (PHP 200) and probably the healthiest Makai Bowl in the menu and known as the green smoothie bowl. Don’t be deceived by the green goo that is the spinach smoothie. It is just as delicious as the rest of the Makai Bowls. Very refreshing. It has spinach, bananas, mangoes, oats, coconut shavings and coconut water.
All in all, for those planning to go to La Union, I highly recommend Flotsam & Jetsam. And please try their Makai Bowls! You won’t regret it!
